Orbis International is an international charity working to make eye care available everywhere, for everyone, so no one has to experience the consequences of avoidable blindness.
The Brief
Red Sea was awarded the assignment to conduct a global search with an emphasis on identifying
leadership talent from diverse backgrounds, including from the Global South.
Red Sea conducted a comprehensive global search, with a strategic and inclusive approach. This process involved extensive research, outreach, and collaboration with diverse networks. The search was completed within the 12-week timeframe and had a robust and diverse longlist of 13 candidates. From the longlist, six candidates were carefully chosen for shortlist interviews with four candidates meeting with the search panel, (two BIPOC and one from Global South). This deliberate approach aimed to break down barriers and provide equitable opportunities for underrepresented leaders in the field of eye care.
There were two female finalists and the successful person selected was Dr Doris Macharia, a woman leader who took up the position based from South Africa in 2021. Dr. Macharia's journey from candidate to the Senior Vice President of Global Programs exemplifies Orbis International's commitment to fostering diversity and empowering leaders from diverse backgrounds.
The success of this executive search showcases the transformative power of intentional diversity in leadership recruitment. The journey from a comprehensive global search to the appointment of a visionary leader reflects a commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive world.
